Acne isn’t just a skin condition, it can quietly chip away at how you feel about yourself.
When you’re battling breakouts, you’re not just dealing with pimples in the mirror, you may also face a loop of anxiety, self-consciousness, and low confidence that affects your work, relationships, and your daily life. I’ve definitely felt this and I understand how hard it can feel to break this cycle.
If you’ve ever avoided a social event, worn heavy makeup to hide a breakout, or felt nervous about someone looking closely at your skin, you’re not alone. I see this often in the clinic and it breaks my heart to see people avoiding living their life because all they can think about is how their skin looks. So, let’s talk about some ways to change these thoughts and reduce anxiety around acne.
Instead of seeing acne as a flaw, see it as a temporary skin condition, not a reflection of your worth. I look at the skin as a communicator of the body, often the body is trying to tell us something and we can use these signs to help decipher that message.
Remind yourself: your skin is the least interesting thing about you and no one is looking at your skin as closely as you are.
If certain social media accounts make you feel worse, mute or unfollow them. Fill your feed with accounts that aren’t skin focused (sometimes the worst thing you can do is to be constantly reading & watching videos on other people’s skin journeys). An even better option is to spend less time on social media and more time focusing on doing things you enjoy!
Lean into clothes, hairstyles, or accessories that make you feel good. Often our confidence takes a hit when dealing with acne, so find a new way to boost your confidence and let your skin be background noise instead of a constant thought.
Sometimes it helps to talk about it, especially when you are really feeling isolated. Open up to friends, a support group, or even a therapist. So many people experience acne throughout their life, so even if they don’t have acne right now, there’s a good chance that they can resonate with you.
If your acne-related anxiety is causing you to avoid work, social situations, or even leaving the house, it may be time to speak with a mental health professional.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques can help reframe negative thoughts and improve self-esteem, even if your skin hasn’t cleared yet.
While acne may change how you feel about yourself, it certainly doesn’t define you. By combining a healthy skincare approach with strategies for emotional support, it’s possible to reduce anxiety, boost confidence and still live your life, regardless of how your skin is showing up today.
