Let’s be honest, we’re all guilty of popping an occasional pimple – or maybe it’s more like on the daily 🤫
The problem with pimple popping is that when not done correctly the bacteria kept within your breakouts can spread. This is when you start to get some not so friendly clusters of pimples popping up all of a sudden!
The other issue is the damage that it causes to your skin, when we do extractions professionally we use tools such as needles or sonophoresis to carefully extract pimples or congestion. Sonophoresis uses sonic waves to help bounce the oil out of your skin, I love to use this for blackheads and sebaceous filaments. For pimples with a head or some inflammation I’ll use a needle to carefully create a channel for the contents of your pimple to be released. When you do start squeezing at pimples this causes these pimple to rupture breaking the skin which creates a much bigger wound for your skin to try and heal, which can cause acne scarring or the skin can be left with pink/brown/purple marks for a long time.
Now I did say there was one time where you should be popping your own pimples, so when is this?
If you have a pimple that has a head and it gets to the point where there is puss right at the surface, then I give you permission to squeeze this one as long as it doesn’t hurt – this is the key part. If you need to apply so much pressure that it hurts you should not be squeezing yet, the ones that are just about to burst out on their own should only need the slightest of pressure. Before doing this make sure your face is clean, and use a clean tissue in each hand to gently push one either side of the breakout. Use an alcohol wipe to clean the spot straight after, and when reapplying skincare make sure you are not wiping your hands over this spot and other areas as this can spread bacteria too.
But if I can’t pick my pimples how else can I get rid of my acne?
My favourite 2 options are acne spot treatments which can help to draw out the oil and get rid of breakouts quicker
The Murad rapid relief spot treatment is great for your smaller pimples
For those blind pimples that don’t have a head but are raised and are usually painful, the deep relief blemish treatment is my go to!
Apply both of these as a spot treatment where needed, after cleansing your skin but before your moisturiser.
