If you walk into any skincare store or spend five minutes scrolling Tik Tok and you’ll quickly be convinced that the answer to clear, healthy skin is just one more product away.
A stronger retinol.
A new serum.
A viral face mask.
A supplement everyone is suddenly talking about.
As a dermal clinician, I’ve met countless people who have spent thousands of dollars trying to fix their skin. Some have cupboards overflowing with products they barely used. Others have invested in treatments that weren’t right for their skin concerns and many have followed advice from well-meaning influencers, friends or even strangers on the internet. I’m not here judging, but I’m hoping I can share some knowledge that will save you from continuing this cycle.
None of this comes from a lack of effort. If anything, it’s because they’re trying so hard.
If I could sit down with everyone before they began their skin journey, these are the things I’d want them to know.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that higher price equals better results.
While there are certainly high-quality products worth investing in, I’ve also seen people spend hundreds of dollars on products that weren’t appropriate for their skin.
The best skincare isn’t necessarily the most expensive. It’s the skincare that’s right for your skin.
This is why I always recommend getting personalised professional advice when it comes to skincare, as there are so many products out there it’s very easy to feel confused, overwhelmed and turn to someone who looks like they have great skin on social media.
Your skin isn’t separate from the rest of your body.
Breakouts, redness, inflammation and sensitivity can all be influenced by what’s happening internally.
Hormones, nutrition, gut health, stress, sleep, medications and inflammation can all play a role.
This doesn’t mean every skin condition is caused by something internal, but it does mean that looking at the whole picture often leads to better, longer-lasting results than simply treating what you can see.

Now I totally get it, when something isn’t working, the natural instinct is to add another product. Then another. And another.
Before long, it becomes impossible to know what’s helping, what’s irritating your skin, or what’s causing new breakouts. This is where most people give up and declare that nothing works for their skin.
I love a good Tik Tok scroll (a little too much sometimes), but it’s important to remember that your skin is unique to you. That means the product that influencer is talking about as the holy grail may not actually be suitable for you.
The person recommending a product doesn’t know your skin type, your medical history, your lifestyle or the underlying reason you’re experiencing skin concerns.
What worked brilliantly for someone else could be completely wrong for you.
Personalised advice will almost always outperform generic advice.
Somewhere along the way, we’ve started believing that healthy skin should be completely poreless, smooth and flawless.
The reality is that skin has texture, pores and our life is a cycle that includes hormonal shifts and stressful times.
A healthy skin goal isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating resilient skin that functions well, feels comfortable and heals well.
This might sound biased coming from someone who works in the industry, but it’s something I genuinely believe.
Many of the people I see have already spent far more trying to solve their skin alone than they would have spent getting the right advice from the beginning.
Sometimes the most cost-effective decision isn’t buying a bunch of random skincare products over and over because surely you’re going to come across something that will give you perfect skin. Instead lean into trusting a professional. This doesn’t have to mean skin treatments, even a skin consultation alone can put you on the right path to taking care of your skin at home.
After years of working with people struggling with acne and inflammatory skin conditions, I’ve learned that successful skin journeys aren’t built on finding the perfect product. They’re built on understanding your skin, your body and what it truly needs (that’s something no viral skincare trend can replace).
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this, it’s that skin health doesn’t have to be complicated.

Explore the full list of treatments, including my signature Skin Journeys for serious skin transformation. For all new clients, I recommend the NEW CLIENT FACIAL which includes a full consultation and a customised 1 hour facial. During the consultation, I will take the time to discuss your skin goals, the history of your skin and make a plan to achieve the goals you are after. Are you ready to feel amazing?
